Did you get rear-ended? Or maybe you backed up a little too close to the car behind you which ended up leaving your bumper scratched or cracked. Been there. Now the biggest question on your mind is how to assess the damage and decide if you need to get your bumper repaired or to get it fully replaced. Well, look no further because we outline when to repair your bumper and when it’s best to replace it after a minor accident.
Indicators
There are a number of indicators that you can look for which will help you determine whether your bumper needs to be repaired or replaced. The first and most obvious indicator that your bumper needs to be replaced is if there is a crack in it. A crack is an absolute indicator that the structural integrity of your bumper has been compromised. Another indicator is if the hooks on your bumper are broken. You’ll know if they are if your bumper is not securely attached or has partially fallen off.
Paint Damage, either a loss of paint or transfer of paint, possibly from another vehicle is an indicator that could mean one of two things: a repair or a replacement. If the damage is minor then we can definitely sand, fill, and match the paint to the exterior colour. However, If the paint damage is more extensive, then replacement may the best route, saving you money and downtime in the long run.
Safety
There are a lot of “car hacks” out there that provide videos on how to repair your bumper or vehicle yourself with at-home kits. However, we definitely do not recommend that this is something that you should try. When you have been in a minor accident and your bumper has been damaged as a result, the structural integrity of the bumper has in most cases been compromised. Meaning that using glue or car bond isn’t going to be effective in protecting you if you are to ever get in an accident again. When you’ve been hit the bumper shock absorber absorbs the impact of the collision in order to protect the body of the vehicle. If this is not properly repaired, additional structural damage could be acquired as a result of another accident. This could directly impact your safety and the safety of those in the vehicle with you.
